The History of Fontana

Fontana has a rich history as a blue-collar town. In the early 1900’s, it got its start as an agriculture town, known for lovely vineyards, citrus orchards, and chicken farms. But, things changed drastically during World War II, when the first steel mill came to the area.

The city wasn’t incorporated until 1952, and soon became California’s leading steel products producer. Things remained that way until the 1970’s when the Kaiser Steel Mill began to slow production, finally closing its doors in 1984.

Kaiser’s conglomerate, Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, remains today and is now the largest managed care organization in the country.

Most people don’t realize the founding charter of the Hells Angeles Motorcycle Club got its start in Fontana. Also, mobster Al Capone once lived here, giving the city somewhat of a controversial past.
